Threat Construction During Crises: How Leaders Justify Coercion

Abstract
How do leaders justify their threats during coercive episodes in international politics? Students on this project will investigate this question by conducting in-depth qualitative and historical research into coercive episodes in international relations. The ultimate goal will be to create a dataset of over 400 coercive episodes with a detailed accounting of how leaders issued threats and what those threats looked like.
