Abstract
This project will involve research into newspaper and census databases through Case Library and by day trips to county archives to discern the presence of Free Blacks and Escaped enslaved people around Central New York. This research area will incude archives within a hundred miles of Hamilton. Good examples are the Smithfield Historical Society in Peterboro, the Onandaga Historical Society in Syracuse and the Madison County Historical Soceity in Oneida. Goals will be to understand the presnce of Free Black and escaped people and to learn their stories through letters, diariies, local newspapers, etc. Director Graham Hodges will instruct students in resarch and, when possible, accompany them to archives. Students will compile data for submission to the director.
Expected outcome wiill be a book aboiut abollitionism and the Underground Railroad in Central New York.
Student Qualifications
An iintroductory American History course is preferable but students may apply without one
