Abstract

Hamilton environmental waters have been monitored before the pandemic, and they contained a myriad of trace contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), such as pain relieve medicines, fragrances, prescription pharmaceuticals, and plasticizers, etc.  The septic tank and the wastewater treatment are not designed to treat these chemicals, and the CECs may be released into the environment.  We do not yet know what effect they may have, but their presence in the environment is detectable.  The project is designed to train students to perform field sampling, sample processing, and sample analysis.  The goal of the project is a long-term monitoring of rural waters that are impacted by CECs.
