This project will inventory Colgate’s landholdings to better assess and quantify the characteristics of the university’s properties. The project team is seeking two summer research students with GIS (or other computer mapping experience) to more accurately delineate and quantify the number of forested acres, miles of roads/sidewalks/trails, acres of building footprints, acreage of parking lots, amount of mowed lawn, and other land use/land cover characteristics using existing tax maps and parcels. The results of this work will allow Colgate to make better informed decisions related to land and resource management, long-term planning, and overall environmental sustainability. Students will walk away with experience using GIS to provide real-world insights and practical application.
GIS and/or other computer mapping skills/knowledge (AutoCAD, qgis, etc.) would be helpful, although we would be willing to train.
Driving - Prior to the summer research period, students must be authorized through the Office of Environmental Health and Safety to operate Colgate University owned vehicles.
