Most homeowners have no idea how well their homes are insulated.  The reason is that, unless you build the house yourself, the only way to learn about the insulation is to hire a contractor to peek inside the walls.  We’re testing an inexpensive sensor that will let homeowners measure their insulation by measuring the temperature difference between a wall surface and the interior of the house.  The next step in developing it will be modeling the heat transport through walls and comparing models and measurements to determine the best locations in which to attach the sensors.

Student Qualifications

Experience with Matlab is desirable, but interested students should talk with Prof. Parks to learn about the project and see how they can contribute.
