Investigating Gravitational Lensing with Singular Light Beams

We are investigating aspects of gravitational lensing that are not visible via astronomical observations. We use novel photonic technologies to deflect optical beams similarly to the way light gets deflected by gravity. Our current studies simulate the lensing action of stars and galaxies. In this project we plan to simulate other lensing objects, such as black holes, dark matter and exoplanet-bearing stars. The student will be involved in making optical alignments of laser beams, program light-modulating electro-optic equipment using Matlab, and image the lensed light.

Experience with Matlab, physics major.
