Project Overview

Monitoring nutrients and trace chemicals in local waters

Faculty Sponsor

The goal of this project is to understand the load of nutrients and trace chemicals in the local natural water and wastewater and wastewater treatment processes.  How do these chemicals vary over time?  How efficient is the wastewater treatment process?  What is the source of these chemicals?  We will work to address these questions over the summer.

Student Qualifications

The project requires both computer (statistics and data processing), lab (handling sewage wastewater, strong acids, strong bases, and organic solvents), and field skills (basic outdoor safety). Some knowledge of chemistry and microbiology may be helpful.
