Abstract

Plastic usage over the years have resulted in their accumulation in the environment due to the slow degradation of plastic polymers.  In addition, plastics release plasticizers over time, some of which are endocrine disruptors and can mimick hormones.  The goals of this project are:
- To quantify and monitor the plasticizers in the environment
- To quantify the plasticizers in the waters used for human consumption
- To start/check the microcosms designed to monitor the degradation of plastic pieces in different environmental waters
Students will be going out to sample environmental waters, sometimes during wet conditions.  The project requires both computer, lab, and field skills.  Some knowledge of chemistry and microbiology may be helpful.
